What is the Janaka Foundation?

The Janaka Foundation is a non-profit foundation created to assist the entire Ananda movement grow into a more secure financial future. The Janaka Foundation serves Paramhansa Yogananda’s mission as expressed through Ananda by his direct disciple Swami Kriyananda and the Ananda Churches of Self-Realization and their associated entities. In addition to creating endowments, and helping individuals give of their means through planned gifts, the Foundation provides new avenues for supporting Ananda’s mission. (Mission Statement)

How is the Janaka Foundation related to Ananda?
Over the years, Ananda has matured and grown to become a worldwide ministry of importance to thousands of devotees. As a result of that growth, the financial needs of the organization have become increasingly complex. The Janaka Foundation was created as a separate, non-profit foundation in May, 2001 to assist the entire Ananda movement with the intricate process of planned giving. Our mission is not limited to a specific Ananda colony or aspect of the work. It is especially designed to support not only existing ministries but also to bring to fruition new and unexplored areas of expression. Your generous contribution to the Janaka Foundation can provide the seed capital for projects that will benefit thousands of truth seekers for years to come.

Ananda is expanding, both in numbers of people involved, and in terms of the fresh and creative ways we are applying Paramhansa Yogananda’s “how-to-live” ideals to different area of human endeavor. Ananda is no longer one centralized non-profit corporation, but rather, many different corporations. This decentralization ensures that those making decisions are closest to local needs. As a separate non-profit foundation, with no affiliation to any specific, local expression of Ananda, the Janaka Foundation can ensure that a donor’s intent can be fulfilled both now, and many years into the future, even as the outer forms of Ananda change.

When you donate money to the Janaka Foundation, you support the Ananda organizations that are in attunement with your ideals. Your interests and recommendations guide Janaka's grants to areas of Ananda's mission that are of deepest inspiration to you. The ultimate decision regarding the awarding of grants is made by the Janaka Foundation Board of Directors.

How Is the Janaka Foundation Serving Ananda?

  • By assisting those who wish to name Ananda as a beneficiary in their estate planning.
  • By making it possible to give to some aspect of Ananda and maintain anonymity.
  • By assisting with support and funding those aspects of the Ananda movement which are vitally important to the whole, such as publishing, the arts, education, outreach ministry and retreat centers.
  • By providing a place for a donor to give undirected gifts, to be used where they are most needed within Ananda’s work.
  • By communicating to Ananda’s membership inspiring projects and ministries as they are created and by encouraging devotees to offer financial support where they feel inspired.
  • By providing direction and guidance in the often complicated area of planned giving.

Donor’s philanthropic interests and recommendations will guide Janaka’s grants to various projects that further the practical application of the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda as expressed through his direct disciple Swami Kriyananda.
